Competitor analysis¶
Overview¶
This document captures the competitive landscape for PetFolio, covering pet owner solutions, pet professional solutions, and newly discovered competitors in the shared care coordination space.
Key insights¶
What competitors do well¶
- Medical record tracking is table stakes - almost every competitor offers it
- Reminders and notifications are a common feature (vaccinations, medication, appointments)
- 11Pets is the most feature-complete competitor across both Personal and Business, offering fine-grained data sharing, family access, and professional sharing
- Boop is UK-native and pairs vet-signed records with a free vet portal, anchored in UK microchipping regulations
- myPet has strong app store ratings (4.8-4.9) and a free professional web portal alongside its consumer app
- DogLog has 100,000+ downloads with multi-caregiver coordination at its core (freemium with a paid tier from £3.99/month)
- VetDex is the only reviewed competitor with offline support, though it is Swiss-based, beta, and not UK-marketed
Where competitors fall short¶
- Offline support is a near-universal gap among reviewed competitors - only VetDex supports offline, and it is Swiss-based, beta, EN/DE only, with no UK marketing. None of the other reviewed competitors offers offline access. Carers need information on walks, in areas with poor signal, or during power cuts.
- Behaviour and routine tracking is weak across the reviewed apps - reviewed competitors focus on medical records and reminders. The rich, narrative behaviour profiles (like Shirley's) and detailed daily routines with activity protocols are not surfaced by any of the reviewed apps.
- Sharing is narrow in the reviewed set - 11Pets and Boop have time-limited records sharing, but the broader handover problem (sitter, dog walker, family, friend, not just vet) is not well served. None of the reviewed competitors combines safety brief prioritisation, recipient accounts, and full carer breadth.
- No combined daily routine in the reviewed apps - none of the reviewed competitors offers a cross-animal timeline view showing how multiple pets' days interleave.
- Professional pairings are separate products - 11Pets, myPet, and Boop all pair a consumer app with a separate vet or business product. None of the reviewed competitors offers context switching between Personal and Professional inside one application.
- Species support is narrow - reviewed competitors focus on dogs and cats. VetDex adds horses and livestock, but rabbits, rodents, birds, reptiles, and other species remain underserved across the set.
- Subscription fatigue is real - 11Pets' transition to a subscription model caused significant backlash and data loss complaints. Woofz has billing complaints. Pricing transparency matters.
PetFolio's differentiation¶
| Differentiator | Competitor landscape | PetFolio approach |
|---|---|---|
| Offline access | Near-universal gap. Only VetDex (Swiss beta, no UK presence) supports offline. No mainstream UK-available competitor does. | Firm MVP requirement, combined with structured profiles, sharing, and Personal+Professional accounts |
| Structured shareable profiles | Apps are either health trackers or coordination tools, not both | Structured profiles with sharing as the core product |
| Behaviour and personality profiles | Basic or absent | Structured prompts with rich freeform content, Top Tips, safety briefs |
| Daily routine with activity protocols | Basic scheduling at best | Detailed timeline with step-by-step procedures (walk protocol, feeding ritual, bedtime routine) |
| Combined daily routine | Not surfaced in any reviewed competitor | Cross-animal timeline for multi-pet households |
| Sharing model | Time-limited records sharing exists (11Pets, Boop). Multi-caregiver handover beyond vet or family is rare. | Time-limited and permanent shares, safety brief shown first, recipient accounts, full carer breadth |
| Single platform for Personal and Professional | Separate products are common; 11Pets, myPet, and Boop pair a consumer app with a separate vet/business product | One application with context switching between Personal and Professional |
| Vet-authenticated records | Boop has PIN-signed vaccination certificates; not common elsewhere | Not planned for MVP |
| Species breadth | Dogs and cats primarily across the landscape; VetDex adds horses and livestock | Dog, cat, rabbit, rodents, birds, reptiles, Other with tailored prompts |
| Tone and personality | Clinical, form-based | Personal, warm, narrative - reads like a handover from someone who loves their animal |
The caregiver handover niche is emerging¶
Recently launched competitors - Shareddog and DogLog - target the shared care coordination problem. This validates PetFolio's core thesis that fragmented pet information and difficult handovers are a real, felt problem. However, neither combines structured profiles with professional account support.
Three most significant competitors¶
- 11Pets - closest in overall vision and feature set, but suffering from subscription backlash, data loss complaints, and poor app store ratings (2.1). Both a threat and an opportunity.
- Boop - UK-native peer with the same Personal+Professional ecosystem shape PetFolio plans (consumer app plus free vet portal). Free for both sides, vet-signed records, time-limited sharing close to PetFolio's model. Strongest UK-market threat in the records-sharing slice of PetFolio's vision.
- Shareddog - purpose-built for shared pet care with emotional connection features and tiered pricing. Still in beta, dogs only, but the closest in shared-care DNA.
Features competitors have that PetFolio doesn't plan¶
| Feature | Competitors | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| AI vet advice/triage | PetsApp, Digitail | Outside PetFolio's scope |
| Pet product recall alerts | Great Pet Care | Interesting but niche |
| Wellness scoring system | Woofz (5 categories) | Could inform future profile enhancements |
| Built-in pet encyclopedia | myPet | Content-heavy, outside scope |
| Emotional connection features (love notes, mood sharing) | Shareddog | Interesting for engagement |
| Training content (video lessons) | Woofz | Outside scope |
| Expense tracking | 11Pets, myPet | Not planned |
| Social feed (likes/comments) | DogLog | Not planned |
| Real-time task assignment | Shareddog | Post-MVP (professional task management) |
| Community lost-pet recovery network | Fi (Search Party) | Hardware-coupled, outside scope |
| GPS / behavioural sensor data | Fi | Hardware-coupled, outside scope |
| Vet-signed digital vaccination certificates | Boop | Authentication layer not planned for MVP |
| Practice-management autocapture | Boop (Boop Lens) | Vet-side integration play, outside MVP scope |
| End-of-life quality-of-life scoring | Boop (HHHHHMM scale) | Specialist clinical feature, outside scope |
Pet owner solutions¶
11Pets - Pet Care
| Website | 11pets.com |
| Summary | "Your all-in-one pet care solution. The most attentive pet-care platform." |
| Pricing | Freemium: Free (reduced) / Premium ~$4.99/month (recent price changes caused backlash) |
| Target | Pet owners, families, vets, shelters |
Strengths:
- Most comprehensive feature set.
- Granular sharing controls (select what data, which pet, with whom, and for how long).
- Non-members can input data without accounts.
- Multi-pet support.
Weaknesses:
- Recent subscription transition caused significant backlash - users lost access to data. Reports of data loss and login issues after updates.
- Poor app store ratings (2.1 on both iOS and Android).
- Interface described as complicated after redesign.
- No offline access.
DogCat
| Website | dogcat.app |
| Summary | "All your dog and cat's details in one place." |
| Pricing | Freemium: Free (with ads) / Plus £3.49/month or £35.99/year |
| Target | Pet owners seeking preventive care tracking |
Strengths:
- Free core experience.
- Good daily activity logging (feeding, bathroom, potty habits).
- Monthly photo gallery with auto-reminders.
Weaknesses:
- Dogs and cats only.
- Too many ads in free version.
- Limited without in-app purchases.
- Slow document uploads.
- No collaboration/sharing features.
myPet
| Website | mypet.com.gr |
| Summary | "The ultimate pet record maker for iOS." |
| Pricing | Not publicly stated. Vet registration is free. |
| Target | Pet owners, vets, breeders |
Strengths:
- Very detailed medical tracking (vital signs, blood glucose, respiratory rate).
- Local backup plus remote sync (potential offline support).
- Free web portal for veterinary professionals to access customer-uploaded records and send records back to the consumer app - same dual-product shape as 11Pets and Boop.
- Built-in encyclopedia with first aid, disease info, breed databases.
- Strong app store ratings (4.8-4.9).
Weaknesses:
- iOS only.
- Greek origin - potential localisation limitations.
- UI appears dated.
- Limited user base.
Great Pet Care (previously PawPrint)
| Website | account.greatpetcare.com/app |
| Summary | "Manage your pet's medical records in one place AND easily share records with others." |
| Pricing | Free to download. ~$10 per medical records update for insurance. |
| Target | US pet owners seeking centralised medical records |
Strengths:
- Pet product recall alerts (unique feature).
- Vet finder across all US states.
- Medical records as vaccination proof for groomers/hotels.
Weaknesses:
- $10 per medical records update is steep.
- US-centric.
- Limited behaviour/routine tracking.
VetDex
| Website | vetdex.app |
| Summary | "Organize vet records in one place." Mobile-first web app for pet health records with offline support and QR-code sharing. |
| Pricing | Free during beta. Post-launch: free for up to 5 animals; paid tier (not yet priced) for unlimited animals and advanced features. |
| Target | Pet owners and small multi-pet households needing portable health records |
Strengths:
- Offline support is genuinely rare in the category.
- Multi-species (dogs, cats, horses, livestock).
- QR-code or link sharing with any vet, boarding facility, or border agent without recipient login.
- Stores vaccinations, medications, vet visits, lab results, and x-rays.
- Web-based and accessible from the UK.
Weaknesses:
- Built in Switzerland; English and German only, no UK-specific marketing or GBP pricing.
- Beta product, no published install or user numbers.
- No multi-caregiver coordination, behaviour, or routine features.
- No companion native iOS or Android app surfaced on the marketing site.
Relevance:
The only reviewed competitor with offline support. PetFolio's offline differentiation is therefore narrower than "no one else supports it" - the durable edge is offline access combined with structured profiles, behaviour, routines, and Personal+Professional accounts. VetDex's Swiss origin and lack of UK marketing keep offline a strong UK-market differentiator in practice.
Fi (FiTracking)
| Website | fitracking.com |
| Summary | "The world's smartest dog collar." GPS tracking and AI-powered behaviour and health monitoring via the Fi Series 3+ collar and companion app. |
| Pricing | Collar hardware purchase plus $19/month subscription (USD; UK pricing not separately advertised). One-month free trial. Available via Amazon.co.uk in the UK. |
| Target | Dog owners seeking safety, location, and behavioural insights |
Strengths:
- GPS tracking with "Search Party" community recovery (alerts nearby Fi users when a dog enters Lost Mode).
- AI behaviour analytics across barking, licking, scratching, eating, drinking, and sleep.
- Vaccine record storage, document upload, and vet search.
- Rugged hardware (IP68/IP66K, up to 3 months battery, wireless charging).
- Photo sharing and community feed.
- Available on iOS, Android, and web.
- Cellular coverage in the US, UK, Canada, and Mexico.
Weaknesses:
- Dogs only.
- Hardware-dependent with a $19/month subscription, creating significant lock-in.
- Cellular coverage limited to the US, UK, Canada, and Mexico - no live tracking elsewhere.
- No multi-caregiver coordination, structured profile, daily routine, or handover features.
- Health record management is lighter than dedicated medical apps such as myPet or 11Pets.
Relevance:
Hardware-led tracking is a different commercial category from PetFolio's profile and sharing model, but Fi's app overlaps PetFolio's domain in vaccine records, photo sharing, and behavioural insights. The "Search Party" community lost-pet recovery network is genuinely novel and not in PetFolio's plan.
Boop
| Website | booppet.app |
| Summary | "Making pet care digital." UK consumer app for vet-signed digital vaccination certificates and shareable health records, paired with a free vet portal. |
| Pricing | Free for pet owners. Free for veterinary practices. Commercial model targets vaccine manufacturer partnerships. |
| Target | UK pet owners, daycares, groomers, boarders, and veterinary practices |
Strengths:
- Vet-signed vaccination certificates with PIN-based signing - genuinely unique authentication.
- Free for both sides of the market.
- UK-native, with explicit reference to the June 2024 UK microchipping law.
- Records follow the pet across practice changes.
- Owners share records via link or print.
- iOS and Android consumer apps.
- Sharing flow close to PetFolio's time-limited model.
- Health and quality-of-life monitoring (HHHHHMM scoring), microchip verification and auto-lookup, weight and body condition tracking, and insurance details in owner wallets.
Weaknesses:
- Vaccine and clinical records focus - no behaviour profiles, daily routines, or non-vet caregiver coordination.
- Multi-species support not explicitly confirmed beyond the dogs/cats/horses scope of UK microchipping law.
- No standalone product domain (booppet.app only).
- No published user numbers.
Relevance:
The closest UK-native peer to PetFolio in commercial shape and sharing model. Boop has the same dual-product structure (consumer app + free professional portal) that PetFolio plans, plus vet authentication that PetFolio doesn't plan. PetFolio's edge against Boop is the breadth of the handover problem (carer + family + sitter + vet, not just vet), structured profiles, daily routines, behaviour, multi-species support beyond dogs/cats/horses, and offline access.
Shared care coordination¶
DogLog
| Website | doglogapp.com |
| Summary | Track and coordinate pet activities and health across multiple caregivers. |
| Pricing | Freemium. Free tier with ads; paid tier from £3.99/month or £39.99/year. 100,000+ downloads. |
| Target | Pet owners coordinating care with family, walkers, sitters |
Strengths:
- Multi-caregiver coordination is the core feature.
- Custom event tracking.
- Trend analysis and data export.
- Free tier available.
- Social feed with likes and comments.
Weaknesses:
- Free tier is ad-supported.
- Dogs only.
- Less structured than PetFolio's profile approach.
- No medical record depth.
Relevance:
The closest competitor in shared-care DNA - multi-caregiver coordination is its core feature, validating the handover thesis with 100,000+ downloads. Skews US, dogs only, and less of a UK market threat than Boop. PetFolio differentiates through structured profiles, broader species support, professional accounts, and the time-limited sharing model.
Shareddog
| Website | shareddog.com |
| Summary | Shared dog care coordination with controlled access levels for multiple caretakers. |
| Pricing | Beta Pack: Free (1 dog, 3 caretakers) / Household Plus: $4.99/month (3 dogs, 5 caretakers) / Caretaker Collective: $49.99/month (20 dogs, 20 caretakers) |
| Target | Families, roommates, co-parents of dogs |
Strengths:
- Purpose-built for shared care.
- Clear tiered pricing.
- Emotional connection features (love notes, mood sharing).
- Task assignment.
Weaknesses:
- Dogs only.
- Still in beta.
- No medical records depth.
- No professional account support.
Relevance:
Very close to PetFolio's sharing vision but narrower scope. The emotional connection features are interesting and not in PetFolio's current plan.
Pet professional solutions¶
AniLog
| Website | anilog.co.uk |
| Summary | "Web-based animal welfare management software. Designed, built and tailored for the Animal Welfare sector." |
| Pricing | Monthly subscription (contact required). |
| Target | Animal welfare organisations, shelters, rescue centres (UK-focused) |
| Notes | Used by Battersea Cats and Dogs Home |
Strengths:
- Deep UK welfare sector integrations (microchip lookup via Chipworks/Identibase/PetLog/PETtrac, insurance via Agria/Petplan).
- Comprehensive animal records including behaviour, diet, location history.
- Electronic signatures for adoption paperwork.
- Google Maps integration for home checks.
- Highly reliable ("never goes down").
Weaknesses:
- UK-specific integrations.
- No public pricing.
- No pet owner-facing features.
- Web-only.
Relevance:
Serves rescue organisations that PetFolio's Professional accounts also target. The microchip and insurance integrations are post-MVP items PetFolio has identified.
Boop Vets
| Website | booppet.app/vets, portal at vet.booppet.app |
| Summary | UK web portal for veterinary practices to issue vet-signed digital vaccination certificates and exchange records with pet owners on the consumer Boop app. |
| Pricing | Free for veterinary practices. Funded by vaccine manufacturer partnerships. |
| Target | UK veterinary practices of all sizes |
Strengths:
- Free for practices.
- PIN-based digital signing of vaccination certificates in seconds.
- "Boop Lens" autocapture extracts data from existing practice management systems with no PMS integration required.
- Chrome extension alongside web access; no installation needed.
- HHHHHMM end-of-life quality-of-life scoring.
- Microchip verification and auto-lookup.
- Bidirectional sharing with the consumer Boop app, and records follow the pet across practice changes.
Weaknesses:
- UK-focused; no published international expansion.
- Dependent on the consumer Boop app for the full ecosystem to work.
- Reliance on vaccine manufacturer partnerships is an unproven commercial model.
- Limited public reviews or scale data.
Relevance:
The dual-product structure (consumer + free professional) is the same shape as PetFolio's Personal+Professional plan and the 11Pets ecosystem. Boop's free-both-sides model and lack of PMS integration friction make it credible to UK practices that 11Pets Business does not currently serve.
11Pets Business
| Website | business.11pets.com |
| Summary | "11Pets is here for all organisations of all sizes who want to manage their pet daycare, boarding, grooming, and training operations." |
| Pricing | Not publicly listed. |
| Target | Groomers, sitters, shelters, boarders, vets, trainers |
Strengths:
- Claims 10+ hours/week time savings.
- Covers broad range of pet business types.
- Connects to consumer 11Pets app (ecosystem play).
- Photo documentation of sessions.
Weaknesses:
- Pricing not transparent.
- Limited public reviews.
- Consumer app backlash may affect brand.
Relevance:
The ecosystem approach (consumer + business) is exactly PetFolio's strategy with Personal + Professional accounts.
PetsApp
| Website | petsapp.com |
| Summary | "PetsApp combines all the tools you need to streamline client communication and practice management." |
| Pricing | Personalised pricing. 1,000+ practices, 6.3M pets registered. |
| Target | Veterinary practices and mobile vets |
Strengths:
- Reported 21% revenue increase for practices.
- 85% reduction in missed calls.
- AI-powered CoPilot and scribe.
- WhatsApp integration.
- $13M+ in payment transactions.
Weaknesses:
- Vet practice-focused, not pet owner-facing for records.
- No pet profile management.
- Expensive for small practices.
Relevance:
Complementary rather than competitive. Focused on practice operations and vet-client communication, not pet profiles.
PetDesk
| Website | petdesk.com |
| Summary | "Custom-made solutions for veterinary-specific pain points." |
| Pricing | Starting at $389/month. Vetstoria booking add-on from $200/month. 8,000+ clinics. |
| Target | Veterinary practices |
Strengths:
- Largest market share.
- Comprehensive suite (phones, booking, marketing, AI scribe).
- Pet owner-facing app for appointment management.
Weaknesses:
- Expensive.
- Syncing issues reported.
- No pet profile management.
- No behaviour/routine tracking.
Relevance:
Practice management, not pet profiles. Potential future integration partner.
