Ownership transfer¶
Overview¶
Ownership transfer covers scenarios where an animal profile needs to move from one PetFolio account to another. Unlike sharing (which grants temporary or permanent read-only access), transfer moves full ownership - the original account no longer holds the profile.
Discovery for this feature area has not yet been conducted. The scenarios below were identified during MVP discovery and are recorded here so context is not lost.
Key scenarios identified¶
Household changes¶
If a household splits and the main account holder will no longer care for the animals, ownership of specific animal profiles needs to transfer to another PetFolio user. The recipient may already have a permanent share on the profile, making them a natural candidate for ownership.
Rehoming and adoption¶
When a breeder or rehoming centre places an animal with a new owner, the animal's profile (and all its history) should transfer to the new owner's account. This preserves the care knowledge built up during the animal's time with the organisation - health conditions, behaviour notes, dietary requirements, and routine.
Breeder to owner¶
A breeder who has built a comprehensive profile for a puppy or kitten should be able to hand that profile over to the buyer, giving them a head start rather than starting from scratch. This is a key value proposition for Professional accounts - the profile becomes part of the service they provide.
Open questions for discovery¶
- What happens to active shares when ownership transfers? Do they carry over, or does the new owner need to re-establish them?
- Can a transfer be reversed if made in error?
- Does the original owner retain any read access after transfer, or is it a clean break?
- For Professional accounts, who can initiate a transfer - only the Owner/Admin, or Editors too?
- Should there be an acceptance step where the recipient confirms they want to receive the profile?
